Off the beaten track does not mean inaccessible. Uzbekistan welcomes direct flights from Paris. Georgia can be reached in less than 4 hours. Namibia has a solid tourist infrastructure. What changes is the absence of mass: no queues in front of the mosques of Samarkand, no selfie-sticks at the foot of the Simien Mountains.

These destinations have in common a density of experiences per hour of travel that classic tours struggle to achieve. Because when a place is still rare, the encounters are real, the guides are passionate, and the landscapes have not yet been overexposed.

◆Unusual destinations that are worth a visit

Uzbekistan: Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva. Timurid architecture among the most spectacular in the world, and fewer visitors in a week than Venice in an hour. Georgia: Multicultural Tbilisi, the hilltop monasteries of Kazbegi, the vineyards of Kakheti. Namibia: Namib desert, Sossusvlei dunes, Etosha and its elephants. Madagascar: baobabs, lemurs, unique biodiversity in the world. Mongolia: steppes, yurts, horseback riding in a country with 2 inhabitants per km².

These destinations do not have the same level of effort. Georgia and Uzbekistan are accessible to all. Mongolia or Madagascar require a little more taste for discomfort.

◆What the tour package brings to these destinations

In less frequented destinations, the organized tour brings something that the independent cannot easily reproduce: access to the local network. A guide in Uzbekistan who knows the family that runs the best plov in Samarkand. A contact in Mongolia who offers a homestay camp 3 days away on horseback from the nearest city.

The language barrier is also more present. In Georgia, Russian helps. In Mongolia or Madagascar, an interpreter is often essential beyond the tourist circuits. And the logistics in these countries can be complex: unreliable transport, accommodation to be booked well in advance, visas to be anticipated.

◆How to prepare for an off-the-beaten-path trip

Level of mental preparation. These trips require an openness to the unexpected. Schedules change, the roads are sometimes bad, comfort varies. This is not a flaw, it is often what makes the trip memorable.

Documents and health. Some destinations require specific vaccinations: yellow fever for Madagascar, hepatitis, typhoid. Uzbekistan and Mongolia require special visa procedures for French nationals. Georgia is visa-free.

Budget. These destinations are often cheaper than the great classics with an equivalent level of comfort. A 10-day tour in Uzbekistan costs between 1,800 and 3,000 euros. In Namibia, between 2,500 and 5,000 euros depending on the lodge.
