Thailand with the family is one of the best travel decisions you can make with children. The country is safe, Thais love children, the food appeals to all tastes, and there is as much to do for adults as there is for the youngest.

Why Thailand is ideal for family travel

Safety. Thailand is one of the safest destinations in Asia for Western travelers. The main tourist areas (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket) have a strong medical infrastructure and a good command of English.

Children are welcome everywhere.** Thais have a culture of welcoming children that does not exist everywhere. In restaurants, temples, markets: children are received with spontaneous warmth.

The diversity of activities. The north (Chiang Mai) offers the ethical elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes for children, treks in the forest. The center (Bangkok) offers temples and floating markets. The south (Koh Lanta, Koh Yao) offers quiet beaches and snorkeling. One country, three radically different experiences.

By age group: what is suitable for whom

Children 3-6 years old: Koh Lanta or Koh Yao in the Gulf of Thailand are the best options. The shallow, calm waters are perfect. Bangkok can be overwhelming for toddlers (heat, crowds, distances). Limit temples to 1-2 visits and allow free time at the pool.

Children from 7 to 12 years old: the ideal age. Elephant sanctuaries, snorkeling, tuk-tuk in Bangkok, cooking class — everything captivates them. Chiang Mai is the highlight of this age.

Teenagers: Bangkok for its energy, street food, night markets. Koh Tao for certified diving (PADI Open Water from 10 years old). Cycling between the temples of Sukhothai or Ayutthaya appeals to teenagers looking for autonomy.

The right Thailand family itinerary

10 days: Bangkok (2 nights) + Chiang Mai (3 nights) + South Island (Koh Lanta or Koh Yao, 4 nights). The classic family tour that covers culture, nature and the beach.

14 days: Add Sukhothai (UNESCO heritage, bikes between temples) or a stay in the northern countryside. More time to slow down, which is often what is missing in overly busy tours.

7 days: Bangkok + Chiang Mai. No beach, but a complete introduction to Thailand cultural and natural.

Activities not to be missed with children

Ethical elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai. Choose a certified sanctuary where elephants are not ridden or trained for shows. Feeding, bathing, and observing these animals in their rehabilitation habitat is an experience that children don't forget.

The Thai cooking class. Most schools offer family workshops with adapted recipes. Learning to make your own pad Thai at 8 years old is memorable.

Snorkeling in the Gulf of Thailand. The waters around Koh Lanta are perfect for children aged 6 and up. Tropical fish, warm waters and shallow.

Chiang Mai's night market. The Warorot Market or the Sunday Night Market are labyrinths of street food and crafts. Children love to choose, bargain (in a good mood), taste.

When to go to Thailand with your family

The dry season (November to April) is ideal. December-January is the most pleasant period: bearable temperatures in Bangkok and Chiang Mai (25-30°C), calm seas in the south.

April coincides with the Songkran festival, the Thai New Year: a gigantic water fight throughout the city. The kids love it.

The rainy season (May to October) should be avoided for the south (rough seas). Chiang Mai and the north remain viable with more frequent rainy episodes.

Health and safety in the family: the essentials

Tap water is not drinkable. Quality hotels provide bottled water. For children, avoid ice in low-end establishments — in standard tourist restaurants, filtered water is used for ice.

The heat: In Bangkok in March-April, temperatures exceed 35°C. Plan outings in the morning (before 11am) and in the afternoon (after 4pm). The mid-day nap is not optional with young children.

Mosquitoes: Apply a DEET-based repellent for children, especially in the evening. The risk of dengue fever exists in rural areas. Antimalarial medication is usually not necessary on conventional tourist tours, but should be evaluated with a travel doctor.

A family medical kit must contain: thermometer, paracetamol, rehydration serum, bandages, sunscreen SPF 50. Pharmacies in Thailand are well stocked if needed.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can you travel to Thailand with children?

From birth technically, but trips with very young children are more comfortable with short flights. From 3-4 years old, Thailand is very accessible. Most activities are practicable from 5-6 years old.

Do I need vaccinations to travel to Thailand with children?

Hepatitis A and typhoid recommended for both children and adults. Check that the vaccination schedule is up to date. Consult a travel doctor 6-8 weeks before departure.

Is Thai food good for kids?

In general, yes. Mild dishes (sticky rice, little spicy pad Thai, omelets) are universally appreciated. Just ask for "mai phet" (not spicy) to adapt the dishes.

How to deal with jet lag with children in Thailand?

The time difference is +5 hours in summer and +6 hours in winter. Children usually adapt in 2-3 days. Expose children to natural light as soon as they arrive and plan for the first few days of light activities.

Are elephant sanctuaries really ethical?

Some yes, others no. The criteria: no mounted elephants, no dressage shows, wide natural area. Certified sanctuaries in Chiang Mai (Elephant Nature Park) meet these criteria. Check before booking.

Koh Lanta or Koh Samui for families?

Koh Lanta is best for families with young children: quieter beaches, less touristy, shallow waters. Koh Samui has a better infrastructure and is suitable for families looking for more amenities.
