Honeymoon in Bali: the island of the gods for a romantic trip

Bali has everything you're looking for for a honeymoon: rice terraces, waterfront temples, surfing beaches and villas with infinity pools. A guide to avoid a resort factory.

Article

Bali is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world. And for good reason: the island offers a density of visual beauty and romantic experiences that is hard to match at this price. But "Bali" is a portmanteau word that covers very different realities depending on where you sleep and what you do.

The 4 Bali — choosing the right area

Ubud: the cultural and spiritual Bali. Tegallalang rice terraces, Balinese temples, cooking classes, Balinese massages, sunrise yoga. The most Instagrammable place on the island — and the most frequented. Luxury hotels with private villas are concentrated here. Ideal for 3-4 nights.

Seminyak / Canggu: the trendy Bali. Rooftop bars, beach clubs, fusion restaurants. More lively, less spiritual. Perfect for couples who are looking for nightlife as much as temples.

Nusa Dua / Jimbaran: the Bali of great resorts. Quiet beaches protected by a reef, 5-star hotels with huge architecture, candlelit dinners on Jimbaran beach. Romantic in the classic sense of the word.

Nusa Penida (neighboring island): the wild Bali. Vertiginous cliffs, Kelingking beach (the "T-Rex beach"), snorkeling with manta rays. 45 minutes speedboat ride from Sanur — a mandatory day trip.

10 Days Honeymoon Itinerary

Days 1-4: Ubud

Settling in a private villa with an infinity pool on the rice fields — that's the image of Ubud. They really exist, for rates between 150 and 400 euros per night depending on the standing.

The typical morning program: wake up at 5:30 am, yoga parade at sunrise on the Tegallalang rice fields, breakfast in the villa, free day. The evening program: dinner at the Locavore (the best restaurant on the island, book 3 weeks in advance), or at the Bridges, suspended above the Campuhan River.

Visits: the temple of Tirta Empul (ritual purification bath), the royal palace of Ubud, the Puri Lukisan museum (Balinese painting). And the Tegallalang Rice Terrace early in the morning before the buses.

Days 5-6: Nusa Penida

Kelingking Beach is the photo of Bali that everyone knows without knowing it's Bali: a T-shaped cliff, a white sand beach below, turquoise water. The descent to the beach takes 45 minutes and is exhausting — the view from the lookout is enough.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays at Manta Point: The rays have a wingspan of 3 to 5 meters. Swimming next to them is the most impressive diving experience accessible without certification.

Days 7-9: Seminyak / Canggu

Modern Bali. The Potato Head beach club at sunset — ocean view, cocktails, live music. Canggu's brunch café in the morning. Balinese clothing shops in Double Six and Seminyak.

Seminyak beach is more beautiful than Kuta (less crowded, fewer vendors) and the waves are perfect for watching surfing without knowing how to surf.

Day 10: Jimbaran

Last night on Jimbaran beach: grilled fish restaurants set up tables directly on the sand. Dinner at sunset with your feet in the sand, shells and lobsters grilled on the barbecue. It's the romantic cliché of Bali — and clichés are sometimes right.

Experiences that make a difference

Balinese massage for couples: Spas in Bali are among the best in the world for value for money. A 90-minute massage in a spa in Ubud costs 20 to 30 euros. The same in a 5-star hotel: 80 to 120 euros. Both are excellent.

A Balinese cooking class: learning how to make nasi goreng, sate and rendang together, then eating what you have cooked — a couple's activity that will remain in the memories for a long time.

The morning offering: the Balinese place canang sari (banana leaf offerings with flowers and incense) every morning in front of each temple, each shop, each house. Observe the preparation with a local guide, understand what it represents in the Balinese Hindu religion — a moment of connection with the island that the resorts do not give.

Sunrise on Mount Batur: the active volcano climbs in 2 hours since 4am. The summit at dawn, with a view of Lake Batur and sometimes the clouds below — one of the most beautiful sunrises in Southeast Asia.

Budget honeymoon in Bali

Bali is one of the few accessible luxury destinations. A high-end stay costs much less than in Europe:

  • Paris-Bali flight (with stopover): 600 to 1,100 euros round trip
  • Private villa with pool in Ubud: 150 to 400 euros per night
  • 5-star resort in Nusa Dua: 200 to 500 euros per night
  • Meal in a good restaurant: 15 to 40 euros for two
  • Activities (Nusa Penida excursion, massage, cooking class): 20 to 80 euros each

A 10-day all-inclusive honeymoon stay in Bali (flight + mid-luxury accommodation + transfers + some excursions): 3,000 to 5,500 euros for two.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Bali?

May-September: dry season, guaranteed sun. July-August is high season (book early). October-November: beautiful light, some rain at the end of the day, less crowded. Avoid January-February: monsoon, flooded roads.

How long is ideal for Bali?

10 to 14 days to see the different areas without running. 7 days is the minimum for Ubud + a beach. Below that, the jet lag (7 hours with Paris) eats 2 days.

Is Bali safe?

Yes. The island is one of the safest destinations in Asia for travelers. The classic precautions apply (do not leave belongings unattended at the beach, watch out for scooters). Scams are rare and benign.

Can you get married in Bali?

Yes, but the Balinese wedding is not legally recognized in France. It is a symbolic ceremony (very beautiful, in a temple, with officiant and flowers) — ideal for renewing your vows or for the destination ceremony. It will be necessary to complete with a civil wedding in France.

Should we get vaccines for Bali?

Hepatitis A and B recommended. Typhoid recommended for stays with local immersion. Japanese encephalitis may be recommended for prolonged rural stays. Consult a travel doctor before departure.
