Why Guyana

Guyana is one of South America's last secrets. While its Brazilian and Venezuelan neighbours attract millions of visitors, this small English-speaking country stuck between the two remains almost invisible on the radars of world tourism. And that's precisely its charm: 80% of the territory covered by intact primary tropical forest, some of the most spectacular waterfalls on the planet, indigenous populations who still live in harmony with the forest. Zero crowds, zero selfie-sticks in front of Kaieteur.

What Guyana offers to the traveler who makes the effort to go there is a wilderness experience unparalleled in South America. Not the formatted Amazonian tourism of Manaus or Iquitos: here, you go up the Essequibo in a pirogue with a Makushi guide, you look for the jaguar by torchlight from a flat boat, you watch a 600-kilogram leatherback turtle go up the beach to lay its eggs under the stars. It's demanding, uncomfortable, sometimes exhausting. And absolutely unforgettable.

The country is also a cultural curiosity. A former independent British colony since 1966, Guyana is the only country in South America where English is the official language. Its population mixes communities of African, Indian, Native American, Chinese and European descent, which gives Georgetown a unique Caribbean atmosphere, very different from what is found in neighboring Brazil or Venezuela.

When to go

Guyana has a humid tropical climate with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons, a direct consequence of the trade wind regime. Temperatures remain stable all year round between 23 and 32°C in Georgetown.

The long dry season runs from September to November: this is the ideal period. The rivers are passable, the forest tracks accessible, the vegetation is dense but not impassable. October is statistically the driest month (87 mm) and the hottest (32°C during the day). It is the de facto high season, even if Guyana remains uncrowded.

The short dry season (March-April) is an excellent alternative: low rainfall, mild temperatures (28-29°C), and often cheaper than in autumn.

The long rainy season (May-August) should be avoided when exploring the interior of the country. June is the rainiest month (342 mm). The rivers overflow, the tracks become impassable. The only exception is the leatherback turtle season at Shell Beach (July-November), which justifies a trip even in rainy weather.

How much does it cost

Guyana is an intermediate destination in terms of budget. Cheaper than the Galapagos or Antarctica, but much more expensive than Peru or Bolivia for an equivalent experience. The main reason: access to most of the emblematic sites (Kaieteur, Iwokrama) requires light planes or long journeys by 4x4 and boat, which only specialized agencies manage effectively.

Count between 60 and 120 euros per day for an organized self-guided trip (simple accommodation, local meals, guides). A tour in a jungle lodge including domestic flights and certified guides costs 3,000-5,000 euros all inclusive for 12-15 days, excluding international flights.

The Paris-Georgetown flight, with one or two stopovers, costs between 700 euros (low season) and 1,400 euros (high season). Domestic flights to Kaieteur (the must-do excursion) cost between 200 and 350 US dollars per person.

Where to go

Guyana can be visited by radiating from Georgetown to the interior of the country. Three major areas stand out: the coast and the capital, the Iwokrama equatorial forest in the center, and the Rupununi savannah in the south.

Georgetown, the wooden capital

Georgetown is a city apart: its victorious painted wooden houses, bustling markets and Dutch canals make it an unusual colonial capital. St. George's Cathedral, built entirely of mora wood, is one of the tallest wooden structures in the world. Stabroek Market, with its cast-iron clock and stalls brimming with spices and tropical fruits, captures the multicultural essence of the country. Stay for two days, no more: Georgetown is quickly discovered and some neighborhoods require caution at night.

Kaieteur Falls, the absolute must-see

Kaieteur is to be done at all costs. These 226-meter-high falls, with one of the most powerful water flows in the world, fall into the heart of a sandstone plateau covered with primary jungle. Their power crushes the famous Victoria or Niagara Falls in terms of volume. You can get there in 45 minutes by plane from Georgetown, you find yourself alone (or almost) on the edge of the precipice. The endemic and tiny golden frog Kaieteur lives only here, on the bromeliads that cling to the mist-shrouded rocks.

Iwokrama, the green heart of the country

The Iwokrama Game Reserve, 371,000 hectares of primary forest co-managed with the Makushi communities, is one of the world's best-managed large tropical forest reserves. The Iwokrama River Lodge, on the banks of the Essequibo River, offers night boat trips to observe jaguars and black caimans, canopy walks suspended 30 meters high, and visits to Native American villages. This is where the most spectacular wildlife is concentrated.

The Rupununi savannah

Beyond Iwokrama, along the road to Lethem, you enter another country. The Rupununi savannah looks like a tropical version of the Wild West: huge ranches, Guyanese cowboys, Makushi and Wapishana Amerindian villages on the banks of rivers full of fish. In the dry season, the residual ponds concentrate hundreds of birds, giant otters and caimans. It's an experience at the end of the world, far from everything.

Georgetown

1-2 days

The capital of Guyana is a unique city: its white-painted Victorian wooden buildings, built on stilts above sea level, have earned it the nickname "Garden City". St. George's Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden structures in the world, has dominated Stabroek Market since the 19th century. Georgetown is the gateway to any tour in Guyana and is best tamed with a local guide.

The Kaieteur Falls, with a height of 226 meters and one of the most powerful flows on the planet, is considered the most spectacular waterfall in the world in terms of water volume. Nestled in the heart of the Pakaraima plateau, they can be discovered from a point of view where you find yourself alone in front of an immensity of jungle and mist. It can be reached by light plane from Georgetown in less than an hour.

Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals do not need a prior visa to enter Guyana (stay up to 90 days). A passport valid for at least 6 months is mandatory. The specific formality in Guyana is the electronic arrival and departure form to be completed online before each crossing: https://ed.gpf.gov.gy/#/. Do not forget this step, otherwise you risk complications at the border.

For health, the main precaution is malaria: malaria prophylaxis is essential if you plan to spend time in the jungle or the Rupununi. Consult a travel doctor at least one month before departure. The yellow fever vaccine is strongly recommended.

Getting around

In Georgetown, private taxis or shared minibuses (known as Route Taxis) are the only convenient means of transportation. There is no organized public transportation for tourists.

To reach the interior of the country, the options are: the light plane (the only way for Kaieteur), the 4x4 on the Linden-Lethem route (about 8 hours to Iwokrama from Georgetown), or the boat and 4x4 combination for Shell Beach. None of these routes can be managed comfortably without a specialized agency.

Recognized agencies in Guyana include Wilderness Explorers, Rainforest Tours, and Dagron Tours. Book well in advance, especially during peak season (October-November).

Culture and uses

Guyana is a multicultural and globally tolerant country. Religious diversity (Hinduism, Christianity, Islam) is a daily reality, visible in the holidays celebrated throughout the year. Mashramani (February 23), the national holiday of the Republic, is the occasion for colorful parades in Georgetown. Holi/Phagwah and Deepavali/Diwali also punctuate the calendar.

Tipping is not systematic but appreciated for jungle guides: 10 to 20% of the service is a good practice. Always ask permission before photographing members of Native American communities.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Guyana when you are French?

No. French nationals are exempt from visa requirements for Guyana for up to 90 days. A passport valid for at least 6 months on the date of entry is mandatory. An online form must be completed before each arrival and departure on the territory: https://ed.gpf.gov.gy/#/. No prior visa to be obtained at an embassy.

When to go to Guyana: when is the best time?

The two ideal windows are the short dry season (March-April) and the long dry season (September-November, with a peak in October). These periods offer temperatures between 25 and 32°C, reduced rainfall and passable forest tracks. July-August remains acceptable thanks to the leatherback turtle season at Shell Beach. June is the rainiest month (342 mm) and the least recommended for exploring the interior of the country.

How much should I plan for a trip to Guyana?

Expect to pay between €60 and €120 per day all inclusive (accommodation, meals, guides, local transport). Organised tours from France start at around €2,200 per person (excluding flights). Flights from Paris with stopovers (often via Trinidad, Miami or Paramaribo) vary between €700 (low season) and €1,400 (high season). Guyana is not a cheap destination: jungle lodges and light planes to Kaieteur are the biggest items of expenditure.

Is Guyana a dangerous country for tourists?

Guyana is classified as a heightened vigilance by the Quai d'Orsay. Crime is concentrated in certain areas of Georgetown (Stabroek, Tiger Bay, Albouystown, South Georgetown). The interior of the country, including Iwokrama and the Rupununi, is safe but requires professional support for logistical and security issues in isolated areas. Traveling with a specialized agency is strongly recommended.

What vaccinations do I need to travel to Guyana?

The yellow fever vaccine is strongly recommended and mandatory if you come from a country at risk. The recommended vaccines are: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid. Antimalarial prophylaxis is essential for rural and forest areas (Iwokrama, Rupununi): consult a travel doctor at least one month before departure. Georgetown and New Amsterdam have a low but real risk of malaria.

How to reach Kaieteur Falls from Georgetown?

The only convenient access to Kaieteur Falls is by light aircraft from Ogle Domestic Airport in Georgetown: a 45 to 60-minute flight over the jungle. Day trips or overnight tours are offered by local operators (Air Services Ltd, Roraima Airways). There is no road to the falls. The round-trip flight with excursion costs between 200 and 350 US dollars per person.

What language is spoken in Guyana?

Guyana is the only country in South America whose official language is English, a legacy of British colonization (independence in 1966). Guyanese Creole is the language of everyday life. French-speaking travelers will have no difficulty communicating in hotels and agencies, but a basic level of English is necessary to orient themselves on their own.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guyana
Can you see jaguars in Guyana?

Yes, Guyana is one of the best places in the world to see the wild jaguar. The Iwokrama Game Reserve, co-managed with the Makushi Native American communities, offers night boat trips on the Essequibo River with experienced guides. Sightings are never guaranteed but the success rate with a good guide is higher than in Brazil or Peru thanks to the low hunting pressure. The tapir, giant otter and black caiman are also frequently seen.

What currency to use in Guyana?

The official currency is the Guyanese dollar (GYD). 1 euro is approximately equivalent to 242 GYD (September 2026). In practice, the US dollar is accepted in most lodges, hotels and agencies. ATMs exist in Georgetown but are rare in the interior of the country. It is advisable to carry enough cash in US dollars for any excursion outside the capital.

How long does the flight from Paris to Georgetown take?

There are no direct flights between Paris and Georgetown. The journey takes between 11 and 14 hours with one or two stopovers depending on the company. The most common connections are via Trinidad and Tobago (Caribbean Airlines), New York (American Airlines), Miami or Paramaribo (Suriname Airways). The return price varies between 700 and 1,400 euros depending on the season.
