Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is one of West Africa's last secrets: an archipelago of 88 islands classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, hippopotamuses that live in the sea and giant tortoises that lay their eggs on beaches that are still virgin.

Why Guinea-Bissau

There are destinations that mass tourism has not yet touched. Guinea-Bissau is one of them, and this is both its fragility and its grace. Less than seven hours from Paris (with a stopover), this tiny West African country hides one of the most extraordinary archipelagos on the planet: the Bijagos. Eighty-eight islands scattered in the Atlantic, most of which have no electricity grid, no road, no hotel in the sense we understand it.

What awaits the traveler who makes the effort to go there is a rare privilege: hippopotamuses swimming in the sea (a biological anomaly observed nowhere else in Africa), giant green turtles laying their eggs on deserted beaches under the stars, bijago villages where initiation ceremonies have punctuated time for centuries. The archipelago has been classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 1996 and has just been granted World Heritage status in 2025.

Going to Guinea-Bissau requires serious preparation, a tolerance for Spartan comforts and a clear awareness of the unstable political context. On the other hand, few places on Earth still offer this feeling of being truly elsewhere.

The rule is simple: Guinea-Bissau can only be visited during the dry season, from November to April. The rest of the year, the monsoon rains make the roads impassable and the Bijagos Islands inaccessible (up to 680 mm in August). The months of December, January and February concentrate the best conditions: pleasant temperatures (19-33°C), calm seas for canoe crossings, and wildlife in full activity in the national parks.

The best time

January and February are the golden months: the harmattan (dry wind from the Sahara) chases away the clouds, the visibility underwater is excellent for snorkeling, and the lodges of the Bijagos are operating at full capacity. November and December are also very good, with slightly more affordable prices. March-April remains passable but the first rains may invite themselves at the end of the stay.

What to avoid

From June to October, don't come. The numbers speak for themselves: 470 mm in July, 680 mm in August, 435 mm in September. This is not ordinary tropical rain, it is the African deluge.

Guinea-Bissau is not a cheap destination, not because local life is expensive (a meal costs a few euros), but because the logistics of tours in the islands have a structurally high cost. The lodges of the Bijagos, accessible only by boat, integrate transfers and meals into packages that are necessarily higher than elsewhere.

Organized tour budget

A 10-day tour in the Bijagos with a specialized operator like Nomade Aventure starts at 3,800 euros per person, flights from Paris included. This is the reference rate for traveling in good conditions with an English-speaking guide and verified accommodation.

Autonomous budgeting

For experienced travellers who manage the logistics themselves, count 40 to 85 euros per day: guesthouse in Bissau (20-50€), local meals (6-12€), crossings in public pirogues to Bubaque (10-25€). The most remote islands (Orango, João Vieira) require chartered boats which are significantly expensive.

The currency is the CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro at a fixed rate: €1 = 655.957 XOF. Cash is essential everywhere except for the few superior hotels in Bissau.

Where to go

BissauTour start

Bissau

1-2 days

A modest and lively capital on the banks of the Geba River, Bissau can be visited in half a day before heading to the islands. The Bandim market, the Portuguese fort São José da Amura and the gracefully defunct colonial palaces set the tone for a city that has not yet been formatted for mass tourism. This is precisely what makes it endearing.

Bubaque

Bubaque

2-3 days

The main inhabited island of the Bijagos archipelago, Bubaque is the gateway to the more remote islands. Its white sandy beaches, fishermen's canoes and bijago huts surrounded by palm trees form a disarmingly simple picture. This is where you can organize yourself to explore the neighboring islands: Rubane, Orango or João Vieira.

Orango Grande

Orango Grande

2 days

Orango Grande is home to one of the few populations of marine hippos in the world, which bathe in the brackish lagoons of the national park and sometimes venture out to sea. The Orango Park Hotel, nestled in the mangrove swamps, offers canoe tours to observe these extraordinary animals in their untouched natural habitat.

Îles João Vieira et Poilão

2 days

The João Vieira and Poilão Marine Park is one of the most important nesting sites for green turtles in Atlantic Africa. Thousands of turtles come to wash up on these wild beaches between July and October to lay their eggs. Out of season, the archipelago remains a snorkeling paradise in translucent waters frequented by dolphins.

Bolama

Bolama

1 days

Former Portuguese colonial capital, Bolama is a ghost town in the mangroves: a governor's palace overgrown with vegetation, an open-air cathedral, streets with silent broken cobblestones. This timeless place, a few hours by canoe from Bissau, fascinates history and photography lovers. Nature has reclaimed its rights with melancholic elegance.

Cacheu

Cacheu is one of the oldest cities founded by the Portuguese in sub-Saharan Africa, dating back to the sixteenth century. Its fort (1641) dominates the eponymous river in the middle of a mangrove forest classified as a natural park. A historic crossroads of the slave trade, Cacheu carries a heavy memory and a natural landscape of striking wild beauty.

The Bijagos archipelago, the heart of travel

The Bijagos are not just another attraction in Guinea-Bissau: this is the reason for the trip. This archipelago of 88 islands in the Atlantic has been classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1996 and a World Heritage Site since 2025. Three islands concentrate most of the tourist interest.

Orango Grandeis home to marine hippopotamuses, an extraordinary species that adapts to salt water. Observation is done in a pirogue, silently, in the brackish lagoons of the national park. It is an unparalleled experience.

João Vieira and Poilãoare the most important nesting site for green turtles in Atlantic Africa. Outside the nesting season (which corresponds to the rainy season, therefore impassable), the waters of the Marine Park remain a snorkeling paradise populated by dolphins and manatees.

Bubaqueis the essential logistical base: an inhabited main island, it has a few decent lodges and serves as a starting point to the more remote islands.

Bolama, the ghost capital

The former Portuguese colonial capital can be visited like a plant memorial: the governor's palace covered in vines, a gutted cathedral, silent streets. Nature has reclaimed its rights with a melancholic elegance that lovers of urban photography will not soon forget.

Cacheu, RAM

In the north of the country, Cacheu was one of the first Portuguese settlements in sub-Saharan Africa and a nerve center of the slave trade. Its fort (1641) dominates the river in the middle of a natural mangrove park. The visit is both historically intense and naturally breathtaking.

Practical advice

Formalities

A visa is mandatory for French nationals. Apply at the Guinea-Bissau embassy in Paris at least two weeks before departure. A visa on arrival is theoretically possible at Bissau airport, but only if the immigration department has been notified in advance: do not count on it without prior confirmation.

Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory upon entry into the country: the international certificate of vaccination will be requested at the airport. Preventive antimalarial treatment is essential, as malaria is endemic and active all year round. Consult a doctor specializing in travel medicine 4 to 6 weeks before your departure.

Situate yourself in relation to the political context: since the end of 2025, a transitional government has been in place following an interruption of the electoral process. Gatherings are prohibited. The Quai d'Orsay classifies the destination as "Not recommended unless there is a compelling reason". Register your trip on Ariane before departure.

Getting around

Guinea-Bissau has only one international airport, Osvaldo Vieira (OXB) in Bissau, which can be reached from Paris via Dakar (Royal Air Maroc) or Lisbon (TAP Portugal). There are no direct flights.

In Bissau, travel is done by taxi (negotiate the price before getting in) or by motorbike taxi (kandongas), which is faster in traffic jams. To the islands, only boats exist: public pirogues from the Bissau pier, slow but economical, or boats chartered faster via your agency.

On the mainland, roads are not very passable outside the main national road. A 4x4 vehicle with a local driver is strongly recommended for any trip to Cacheu or the interior of the country.

Culture and uses

Guinea-Bissau is a Muslim-majority country with a strong Christian and animist component, coexisting with remarkable harmony. The Bijago society of the islands is matrilineal: women hold significant social power, particularly in the transmission of land and initiation rites.

Respect local dress codes in the villages, especially during ceremonies. Always ask permission before photographing people. Tipping is not an institutionalized norm, but a gesture of 5 to 10% in restaurants and hotels frequented by tourists is appreciated.

Portuguese and Crioulo (Creole) are the languages of communication: a few words of Portuguese (obrigado = thank you, bom dia = hello) will be warmly welcomed. Competent English-speaking guides are found exclusively through specialized agencies.

Be prepared for the frequent power cuts in Bissau and the total lack of grid on the islands. Carry a headlamp, basic medication and enough cash for the duration of your stay.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Guinea-Bissau if you are French?

Yes, a visa is mandatory for French nationals. The application is made at the Embassy of Guinea-Bissau in Paris with a recommended delay of 15 days. A visa on arrival at Osvaldo Vieira Airport in Bissau is technically possible, but only if the immigration department has been notified in advance, and its cost is higher. Bring a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date.

Is Guinea-Bissau safe for travelers?

Guinea-Bissau is classified as "Not recommended unless there is a compelling reason" by the Quai d'Orsay (MEAE) due to chronic political instability. At the end of 2025, an institutional coup d'état interrupted the electoral process and a transitional government is in place until elections scheduled for December 2026. Gatherings and demonstrations are prohibited. The northern border area (Casamance) remains particularly risky. For travellers who do go there, vigilance must be maximised: avoid night travel, assembly areas and the centre of Bissau in case of tensions.

When to go to Guinea-Bissau: when is the best time?

The dry season (November to April) is the only practicable period to visit the country and access the Bijagos Islands. The best months are December, January and February: mild temperatures (19-35°C), almost no rain, calm sea for canoe crossings. The rainy season (June to October) is to be avoided absolutely: 470 to 680 mm of rain per month, flooded roads and inaccessible islands.

What vaccinations are needed to travel to Guinea-Bissau?

Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory: an international vaccination certificate is required at the entrance of the territory for all travellers over 9 months of age. Preventive antimalarial treatment is essential (endemic malaria). Highly recommended vaccinations: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, meningitis (risk between December and June). Consult a doctor specialising in travel medicine at least 4 weeks before departure.

What budget should I plan for a trip to Guinea-Bissau?

Guinea-Bissau is an expensive destination not because of the cost of living locally, but because of the specialized tours and boat transfers to the islands. A 10-day organized tour in the Bijagos starts from 3,800 euros per person (flights included from Paris). Self-catering, count 40 to 85 euros per day (accommodation 20-80€, meals 6-12€, transfers in public pirogues 10-25€). The currency is the CFA franc (XOF): 1 euro = 655.957 XOF (fixed rate). Cash is essential outside the big hotels in Bissau.

How to get to the Bijagos Islands from Bissau?

Access to the Bijagos is exclusively by boat from the pier in Bissau or Bubaque. Public pirogues (slow, economical: 10-25 euros) and private boats (150-350 euros) provide the connections. The crossing to Bubaque, the main island, takes about 3 hours by public pirogue in calm seas. To the most remote islands (Orango, João Vieira), plan boats chartered by your tour operator. In the dry season, the sea is generally passable.

Is the Bijagos archipelago really classified by UNESCO?

Yes. The entire Bijagos archipelago has been classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 1996. In July 2025, it was also granted UNESCO World Heritage status. Two national parks protect biodiversity: Orango National Park (marine hippos) and João Vieira and Poilão Marine Park (green turtles, manatees, dolphins). Access and activities are regulated to preserve the ecosystem.

What language is spoken in Guinea-Bissau?

Guinea-Bissau is the only Portuguese-speaking country in West Africa (former Portuguese colony). The official language is Portuguese, but Crioulo (Portuguese-based Creole) is the lingua franca spoken by almost the entire population in daily life. French is not understood outside of Bissau and tourist facilities. Notions of Portuguese or Spanish make the trip much easier. English- or French-speaking guides working with specialized agencies are highly recommended.

How long does the flight from Paris to Bissau take?

There are no direct flights between Paris and Bissau. Connections are via Dakar (Royal Air Maroc + TAP) or Lisbon (TAP Portugal), with a total journey time ranging from 6h30 to 9 hours depending on the connection. Return prices vary between 410 euros (low season) and 900 euros (high season). Book well in advance, seats on these confidential routes are limited.

Is Guinea-Bissau good for solo travelers or families?

The destination is primarily aimed at experienced travelers, curious and comfortable with difficult conditions (limited comfort, complicated access, political instability). Solo tours are possible via specialized agencies that take care of all the logistics. Families with young children are not recommended: high health risks (malaria, water), almost non-existent medical infrastructure outside Bissau, and access to the sports islands. For families, a combination of Senegal (base) plus a short excursion to the Bijagos remains the most reasonable option.
